A Wisconsin man who killed his three daughters to get back at his ex-wife is due to find out if he will be
A jury found in April that 35-year-old Aaron Schaffhausen was sane when he killed 11-year-old Amara,
8-year-old Sophie and 5-year-old Cecilia at their River Falls’ home.
He faces a mandatory sentence of life in prison for each death on Monday in St Croix County Circuit Court.
The judge must decide if that sentence will include the
possibility of supervised release after at least 20 years, or if Schaffhausen
will stay behind bars forever.
Schaffhausen admitted he killed the girls last July to get
back at his ex-wife.
Evidence showed that Schaffhausen texted his ex-wife last
July to ask for an unscheduled visit.
She consented but said he had to be gone before she got home
because she did not want to see him.
The girls' baby sitter told investigators the children were
excited when he arrived.
The baby sitter left. Schaffhausen called his wife about two
hours later, saying: "You can come home now, I killed the kids."
Police arrived to find the girls lying in their beds, their
throats slit and their blankets pulled up to their necks. White T-shirts were
tied around their necks. Cecilia's body also showed signs of strangulation.
He did not testify at his trial but the defence played a
recording of his interview with police after the slayings.
During the first two hours of the video, Schaffhausen is
silent. In the final hour, he cried as an investigator asked him about tucking
the girls into their beds.
Later, he is seen on the videotape saying, "I don't
know what I want; I don't know what I need. I want my girls back. ... I need
help."
Jurors found he had a mental defect, but knew the killings
were wrong.
