Tara Reid talks to MSN about the buzz around her spoof movie Sharknado.
Sharknado has exceeded expectations – and then some. The so-bad-it’s-good disaster film, which combines a tornado with dozens of sharks, has been a social media-fuelled sensation.
The biggest name in the film is Tara Reid, who fights to stay alive after a freak hurricane hits Los Angeles and shoots man-eating sharks into the sky. No, it’s not meant to be taken seriously, and the absurdity of the plot has led to huge amounts of attention around one of the silliest films of the year.
The actress admitted to MSN that she’s overwhelmed by the response to Sharknado. “It's a phenomenon. There's a billion to one chance of this happening or ever happening again,” Tara admitted. “We had no idea. We did zero press for the movie so this is like winning the lottery. This shows you the power of social media. It's gone viral all over the world and people just love it.”
She admitted she had doubts about accepting the role in the low-budget made-for-television film. “In the beginning I thought, 'Oh my God. I can't say yes to this. People are going to make fun of me'.”
But the humour won her over. “I went to dinner with some friends and I told them about the story and we had such a laugh. All of a sudden that's all we were talking about.
So I said, 'I'm going to do this movie'… It's completely a spoof. That's what makes it so funny – it's so bad it's genius.”
It’s been 14 years since America Pie and Tara’s career hasn’t lived up to early promise, with her biggest hit of late being the fourth installment in the Pie series, American Reunion. Aside from that, most of her recent work has been straight-to-DVD films or TV movies like Sharknado.
Tara’s a natural comic and it’s comedies like Sharknado where she thrives. Despite it being a low-budget film made for the Syfy channel, the social media frenzy could end up catapulting the star back onto the big screen where she belongs.
