United v Real For Bale!
Manchester United could yet make a late bid for Tottenham’s Gareth Bale as David Moyes looks to bring a difficult summer to a successful end at Old Trafford.
Moyes and his United predecessor Sir Alex Ferguson are huge fans of Bale and football staff at the club all believe the Wales winger could bring some real star quality to Old Trafford.
United have so far been put off from getting involved by the difficulties of dealing with Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy, who is demanding a world record fee beyond £80million.
The Barclays Premier League champions - who lifted the Community Shield on Sunday after beating Wigan 2-0 - are still scarred by manner in which Levy hiked up the price for Dimitar Berbatov to £30m back in 2008.
It is understood, however, that United’s long-running interest in Bale – they have tracked him since his days at Southampton – could yet lead to a bid as they try to add a star name to Moyes’s playing squad between now and the end of the month.
With United’s pursuit of Barcelona’s Cesc Fabregas no longer active after the Spaniard indicated he wanted to stay at the Nou Camp and an imminent bid for Everton’s Marouane Fellainini and Leighton Baines not sure to succeed either, Moyes is beginning to run out of time.
A bid for Bale would be hugely ambitious, given the mighty Real Madrid have so far not managed to price the player from White Hart Lane, but United would hope to tempt Tottenham by offering a higher down payment than the Spanish club did a fortnight ago.
United’s owners the Glazers remain determined not to sell Wayne Rooney this transfer window and it remains highly unlikely that the England striker will move anywhere this summer.
However, the Americans are also determined to land a genuine marquee signing this summer and Bale certainly fits that bill.
