Polo The Sport Of Kings
Polo has been in Nigeria for the past 109 years, though it's popularity seems to be on the rise as more and more people are getting involved in the noble sport.
According to Global Polo, the British colonialist brought polo to Nigeria more than a century ago, making it the first formally organised sport in the country. A fact which is hard to believe considering popularity of sports introduced at a later stage such as football and boxing.
The sport is now governed by the Nigerian Polo Association and has became quite popular thanks to the establishment of various polo clubs around Nigeria.
The largest polo clubs in Nigeria are the Kaduna, Lagos and Kano polo clubs. Polo clubs can also be found in Port Harcourt, Ibadan, Katsina, Jos, Yola and Abraka.
The sport has also produced a number of local stars, including Uneku Atawodi, the only black female polo player in the world.
Activity
Polo festivals are held all year, most notably the Lagos International Polo Tournament in March as well as Katsina's MTN Polo Carnival which is considered to be the largest polo tournament in Nigeria.
