Anambra State Government has renamed the State
University which has campuses in Uli and Igbariam as 'Chukwuemeka
Odumegwu Ojukwu University'.
The Governor of the state, Peter Obi made this known during a
ceremony to mark the posthumous 80th birthday of the late Ikemba Nnewi,
Dim Chikwuemeka Odumegwu-Ojukwu at the permanent site of the University at
Igbariam.
In addition to naming the school after the late Ikemba, Governor
Obi who also issued a cheque of N5 billion for the infrastructural development
of the University, disclosed that the cash donation was made in collaboration
with the Federal Government. He added that arrangement has been made to ensure a
cooperation between the Uiversity and a renowned foreign university to improve
the academic programmes of the institution.
Promising
that the State Government will take of the debt the Institution owed, the noted
that the University’s monthly subvention had been increased by 15 per cent with
effect from January this year.
Six
buses were donated to the school; two for the Students Union Government (SUG)
of the two campuses and four Security vehicles for the maintenance of peace and
security in the School.
Some
of those present at the event were members of the University community, ex
Biafran soldiers, members of the late Ikemba’s family (Bianca and Emeka Ojukwu
Jr.) and a host of others.
