Everton have turned on former manager David Moyes after Manchester United made a 'derisory and insulting' £28million joint bid for Leighton Baines and Marouane Fellaini.
United lodged a £16million bid for Fellaini - just a fortnight after his £23.5million buy-out clause expired - and then tried to include Baines in the deal for an additional £12million, according to the Liverpool Echo.
Unsurprisingly, Everton immediately turned down the £28million dual bid from former manager David Moyes, which came just two days before the start of the Barclays Premier League season.
A club statement released early on Monday afternoon read: 'Everton can confirm that it has received bids from Manchester United for two players. Those bids were immediately rejected out of hand as derisory and insulting.
'The Club did not make public these details as it was vital Roberto Martinez’s preparations for the opening game of the Premier League season were not disrupted in anyway.'
Having failed to sign Cesc Fabregas, Thiago Alcantara and other summer transfer targets, United have now set their sights on the Everton duo as they try to strengthen their squad.
But the offer for Fellaini and Baines has reportedly created ill-feeling on Merseyside, coming in at least £10million short of Everton's valuation. It will only increase the reluctance to sell to Moyes, who replaced Sir Alex Ferguson in June.
Roberto Martinez revealed last week that United had bid £12million for England left-back Baines just after the end of last season.
The club paid Belgian side Standard Liege an initial £15million - later increased to £17.5million with add-ons - for Fellaini in 2008 and so are understandably unwilling to let him go for less.
Celebrity Man United fan Eamonn Holmes tweeted: 'Everton have just turned down a combined £24million bid from Man Utd for Fellaini and Baines. Have to say just right - bit of a cheek United.'
