Troy Deeney has emerged as a shock £5million target for Tottenham. Spurs are weighing up a move for Watford’s powerful striker with Jermain Defoe set to follow Clint Dempsey out of White Hart Lane.
West Ham, who are among the bidders for Defoe, and Fulham are also showing a keen interest in the 25-year-old target man.
Deeney only a signed a new three-and-a-half-year contract at Watford in March, preventing one of the most prolific strikers in the Championship last season from walking away as a free agent this summer.
The former Walsall player, who moved to Vicarage Road for £500,000 three years ago, scored 20 goals despite missing the first month of the season following his release prison after serving a third of a 10-month sentence for affray.
He hit the injury-time winner that sent Watford through to the Play-off final at Wembley, although Gianfranco Zola’s team eventually lost out to Crystal Palace for a place in the Premier League.
Deeney has continued his rich vein of scoring this season with four goals in his first two games, including a hat-trick in Saturday’s 6-1 win over Bournemouth.
Meanwhile, Denmark midfielder Christian Eriksen admits he would be interested in a move to White Hart Lane.
The 21-year-old has rejected interest from Russia and could now be reunited with his former Ajax team-mate Jan Vertonghen at Spurs.
'Tottenham are a great club,' the Ajax midfielder told Danish newspaper BT.
'I know from Vertonghen that it is a good club which is interesting. but there has not been any contact.
'I do not know if I am going to leave Ajax. We'll find out in two weeks.
'There are to my knowledge no negotiations right now either with a new club or Ajax.
'If there is a good approach (from another club), I see as an opportunity to try something new, but if nothing comes, I do not mind staying.'
