N12m Up For Grabs At Akpabio International Scrabble Classics

The Nigeria Scrabble Federation (NSF) says $75,000 (about N12 million) will be up for grabs at the 7th Gov. Godswill Akpabio International Scrabble Classics scheduled for September 25 to September 29 in Uyo, Akwa Ibom.
Farouk Baba-Inna, a member of NSF Technical Committee, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos that the prize money would be shared by winners featuring in all the categories of the tournament.

"The governor is an avid scrabble player, and he has decided to invest in the growth of the game in the county.

"The tournament will serve as a platform for players to measure the improvement of their skills and to also win lucrative prizes,” he said.

Baba-Inna disclosed than more than 300 players, comprising international and local participants were expected at the competition.

He named the four categories that the players would compete as Masters, Intermediate, Open and Veteran.

"The winner in the Master’s category will collect N2.25 million, while the winner in the Intermediate class will smile home with N1 million.

"The best players in the Open and Veteran categories will win N700,000 each, while the overall best player in the Ladies category will go home with N100,000," Baba-Inna said.

According to the official, the five-day event will be held at the Le Meridien Ibom Hotel and Golf Resort in Uyo.

He lauded Akpabio for the sponsorship and his contributions to the development of the game.
